Taking proper care of your teeth provides you with a number of benefits. Of course, you want a bright, white, and healthy smile. Additionally, practicing the right dental health services at home can also protect your overall health. At Lovett Dental Cinco Ranch, we want to give you the tips and tools you need to maintain good oral health for your entire family.
Dental Health Services You Can Do on Your Own
In order to get the best out of your dental care routine possible, it is best to think of you and your dentist as partners. You both want what’s best for you in terms of a smile you can be proud of and good health. At Lovett Dental Cinco Ranch, we strive to provide this partnership for you so you feel comfortable and calm seeking dental health services. The following dental health services are ones that you can do at home to help keep your teeth and mouth healthy:
Brush at Least Twice a Day
Use a good fluoride toothpaste and a toothbrush that is the right size and design for your mouth. Your dentist can recommend a toothbrush and/or toothpaste if you need guidance. If possible, you should brush your teeth after every meal. However, that is not possible for most people. Instead, aim to do so in the morning and before bed.
Floss at Least Once a Day
Even if you have a toothbrush that claims to get in between teeth and other hard-to-reach areas, make sure that you do not skip flossing. Physically moving the floss in between each of your teeth allows you to remove minute food particles and other debris that could cause cavities, gingivitis, bad breath, and more.
Practice Smart Snacking
Snacking does not have to be a bad thing. Just make sure that you limit problematic foods and beverages. These include sticky foods, as well as sugary drinks and foods.
While these foods and beverages taste good, they can leave a film of sugar on your teeth that can encourage the growth of bacteria. If possible after eating or drinking these types of substances, brush your teeth. At the least, try to rinse your mouth with clean water. Additionally, get regular teeth cleanings from your dentist to keep up with your oral health.
Don’t Use Tobacco — Or Quit if You Already Do
In addition to the negative effects using tobacco has on your lungs, it can also lead to oral disease as well. Smoking and/or chewing tobacco can also lead to teeth discoloration, bad breath, and other oral health concerns.
Schedule Regular Dental Visits
As noted above, you and your dental professional are partners in maintaining good oral health. While the typical schedule for dental checkups is every six months, you might need to be seen more often in order to address a particular issue. You will also want to schedule an appointment before your regular cleaning if you have any concerns or questions about your dental health.
